BARBACAN
____
Barbacàn is a small family-run winery in Valtellina that has its roots deep in the history of the area. Its production is essential and extremely territorial typical, well summarized by the combination of Nebbiolo and the Alps. The rigorous and traditionalist approach, inspired by the historical and cultural identity of the steep and rocky Valtellina terraces, is evident starting from the name of this artisan reality which, in the local dialect, indicates the supporting walls of some old buildings present among the vineyards.
The Barbacàn winery is managed by the winemaker Angelo Sega and by his sons Luca and Matteo, who deal independently with all stages of production, from the heroic cultivation of vines on steep alpine slopes to bottling. The family's vineyards are located in the hamlet of San Giacomo di Teglio, in the heart of the Valgella sub-area, for a total of 6 hectares on the traditional terraced slopes. The best plots of this micro-property are those identified with the toponyms Söl and Piza Mej, real company crus, located at about 500 meters above sea level. In full respect of traditions and eco-system, the approach in the vineyard involves the use of low amounts of copper and sulfur, only when necessary, avoiding not only pesticides and herbicides, but also fertilizations and irrigations. In the cellar fermentations take place spontaneously, using only the indigenous yeasts, and for the refinements large oak barrels are preferred.
The Barbacàn wines are able to express directly and profoundly the extraordinary winemaking reality of the Valtellina. Chiavennasca grapes, the typical Nebbiolo from the Valtellina area, are born from this grape, of which the Sega family holds over 20 different clones. The desire to rediscover and savor the archetypes of the territory through the rigorous typicality of the wines produced is clearly manifested in the labels, which reproduce the rock engravings left by the ancient Neolithic peoples. The red products in fact seem to evoke the prehistoric images and the primary paradigms of a territory that, in the glass, opens up part of its deepest secrets.
