Coche Dury, the best white wines from Meursault

The wines of Domaine Coche-Dury are considered to be the greatest whites not only of Burgundy, but of the whole world. The winery is located in Meursault and was founded by Léon Coche in 1920, who not only made his own wines but also sold some of the grapes to négotians in the area. In 1978 it became the Domaine Coche-Dury, taking the name of Jean-Francois' wife, Léon's grandson. Today, Jean-Francois' son Raphaël has been running the family business since 1999, and after completing his studies in oenology, he became the winery's official oenologist in 2010. 

Raphaël has also extended the surface area of the vineyards in recent years to 10.5 hectares, divided as follows: nine in Meursault and the remainder in Pommard, Monthélie, Auxey-Duresses, Puligny-Montrachet and Corton-Charlemagne. The vines cultivated are mainly Aligoté and Chardonnay, spread over eight hectares of some of the most prestigious vineyards in the entire region; Pinot Noir covers the remaining two and a half hectares.

The secret of the success and prestige of this Domaine is the great care and attention paid to each stage of production, with a philosophy strongly linked to tradition. The grapes are usually harvested early to encourage a high acidity that will allow the wine to age for a long time, fermentation takes place in barrels that are replaced every year, the lees are stirred regularly during the twenty-two months of refinement in barriques, then the wine is racked twice before being bottled, strictly by hand, without filtration.

Today, 70% of the grapes harvested are used by the domaine, for an annual production of around 45,000 bottles, while the rest is still sold, as in the past, to négociants. The wines of the Domaine Coche-Dury are incredibly fresh and intense, with great ageing potential.
