SYLVIE ESMONIN
Sylvie Esmonin: fine Burgundy wines
The Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is based in Gevrey Chambertin and has 8 hectares of vineyards between the Costa de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, almost all of which produce Pinot Noir.
Sylvie's grandfather worked for the Conte de Moucheron, former sole owner of the large Clos St Jacques vineyard. When the count had to sell, he bought a part of the vineyard together with his house.
Sylvie Esmonin graduated in Agronimic Engineering at the University of Montpellier and worked as a winemaker for several wineries and in different places until 1986 when, followed by the request of her father Michel, she took over the company reins radically transforming the philosophy of the Domaine. If in fact until then it was sold to the Negocos, with the advent of Sylvie the command was decided to make wine on its own and to bottle the prorie labels directly.
In 1989 the first bottling was carried out deriving from the then 3 hectares of vineyard owned. In 1998, his father Michel retired and since then Sylvie has expanded the legacy up to the current 8 hectares.
No herbicides have been used since 1990 and the domaine is farmed more or less organically, though not systematically so.
In the vineyard a meticulous care of the plant's salutation is practiced, the philosophy is to produce a natural wine by experimenting with biological-biodynamic practices without ever yielding to derive integralists. In the winery the vinification involves a part of non-destalked grapes (70% top range wines, 30% on intermediate wines and in absence on the Bourgogne AOC) and the use of indigenous yeasts only.
The resulting wines are elegantly elegant with the firmness of Gevrey combined with a silky elegance.
