The 2017 in Barolo, an underrated vintage.
What the tasting box contains:
Barolo "Ginestra Casa Maté" 2017 Elio Grasso: The "Ginestra" cru where the grapes used to produce Elio Grasso's "Casa Maté" are cultivated is a vineyard of just three hectares at 350 meters above sea level, the 40 years old vines rise on calcareous-clayey soils and are trained with the traditional Guyot system. Alcoholic fermentation takes place at controlled temperature in steel tanks with continuous daily pumping over while the aging lasts 30 months in oak casks followed by 8-10 months in bottle. Barolo "Ginestra Casa Maté" Elio Grasso shows in the glass a ruby red color which will tend to garnet red with time accompanied by a full and intense bouquet with hints of red fruit, dried flowers, mint, spices and underbrush. In the mouth the wine is robust and elegant, with silky tannins accompanied by a nice freshness.
Barolo 2017 Francesco Rinaldi: "Entry level" of the winery, this is a deep Barolo aged in oak barrels for at least three years. It is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes from the vineyards of Rocche dell'Annunziata, Boiolo, Sarmassa, Vignane and Codana scattered in three different communes of the Langhe, Castiglione Falletto, La Morra and Barolo. Ruby color with garnet reflections, on the nose we find all the typical scents of the great Barolo Docg: spices, rose, violet, small red berries and strong balsamic nuances, in the mouth it is direct and austere, with a slight flavor, very harmonious. It can be well matched with structured dishes, game or venison.
Barolo "Parussi" 2017 Chionetti: Made with Nebbiolo grapes from the homonymous cru located in the municipality of Castiglione Falletto, where the vines are planted at 200 m above sea level. Each step is performed with extreme care in respect of the terroir according to the principles of natural viticulture, where the use of any chemical substance is prohibited. The harvest takes place between October and November, the medium/long alcoholic fermentation takes place in wooden vats, at moderate temperatures with maceration on the skins for about 20-30 days. This is followed by a passage in large casks of non toasted French oak. The wine does not undergo any filtration or stabilization. This fine Barolo Parussi 2017 is ruby in color to the eye, slightly opalescent. The nose, in its youth, shows nuanced notes of floral and red fruit, to which is added a particular earthy note and final balsamic hints of licorice and spice. The mouth is pervaded by a sensation of freshness together with great complexity. Important but silky tannins and a long savory finish.
