Farrside Pinot Noir 2018 By Farr
The 2018 Farrside Pinot Noir is an Australian red wine produced by the By Farr winery. Compared to the other two Pinot Noirs produced by the winery, this wine is more structured and fleshy while still maintaining a nice freshness and verticality. The grapes come from a blend of clones 114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6, from younger vineyards located on the north side of the vineyard, on a volcanic limestone soil.
The darker soils and cooler climate result in a wine that is full-bodied but at the same time angular, due to the high acidity that develops in the grapes. Harvesting is manual with careful selection of grapes in the vineyard. Fifty percent of the fruit is destemmed before a four-day cold soak before open fermentation in stainless steel for 12 days with natural yeasts. The wine was then transferred by gravity into 50% new Allier Damy barrels where it was racked twice: first after malolactic fermentation and again after 18 months before bottling.
Pinot Noir Farrside is a wine with a balanced nose of red and black fruits along with fleshy, spicy and mineral notes that continue to evolve in the glass. This is a firm but delicate wine with a long, structured finish.
