Côtes Catalanes "Calcinaires" 2019 Domaine Gauby
Côtes Catalanes "Cailcinares" is a red wine that is the result of the skilful hand of the Gauby family, for whom respect for the terroir has been of primary importance for several generations now. Their work in organic and biodynamic agriculture gives the wines a depth rarely achieved in Roussillon. The estate has evolved a great deal since their son Lionel Gauby took over, who attaches great importance to the production of fresh, fine and very drinkable wines.
Domaine Gauby's Calcinaires comes from a blend of Grenache Noir, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Syrah from vines aged between 10 and 20 years, grown on calcareous and clay-limestone soils.
On the nose, you would think that the wine would reveal great power and a very animal side. This is not the case, it is rather a subtle, elegant wine with great aromatic finesse. Notes of black fruits (blueberries, blackcurrants) mix with a slightly spicy touch (white pepper). A hint of smoked tea adds a little rusticity to the wine, but it is balanced.
In the mouth, the attack is soft, the tannins are fine and silky. The fruit is very pleasant, mouth-watering. A slightly minty freshness develops during the aftertaste. It is really impressive how digestible and fine this wine is for this type of terroir. Another great wine perfectly executed by the Gauby family.
