Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Rouge 2016 Domaine Gauby
Domaine Gauby's Vieilles Vignes Rouge turns its Roussillon neighbours green with envy. Indeed, the domain's vines can be up to 120 years old and thus give wines of unparalleled depth. The wines are concentrated, powerful and very drinkable. It was Lionel Gauby, the son of the famous Gérard Gauby, who began making more accessible wines in his youth by extracting less substance and tannins. This cuvée is the perfect illustration.
The vinification is different from that of the white Vieilles Vignes in that it is done partly in cement vats and partly in demi muid. The vineyard is naturally farmed organically and with the utmost respect for biodiversity. It is a daily work that they try to emphasize in the heart of this magnificent Roussillon vineyard.
Domaine Gauby's Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Rouge is made from a blend of equal parts Grenache Noir, Carignan and Syrah with a small addition of Mourvèdre. The nose initially reveals animal notes, a sanguine side and a very nice spicy side. After oxygenation, ripe fruit notes are revealed. There is a note of garrigue, green tea and pepper. It is superb! The palate is powerful, lively with notes of coffee, the balance between the matter, the alcohol and the tannins is simply masterful. It is rare to find a wine of such complexity at this price.
