Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Blanc 2016 Domaine Gauby
Domaine Gauby's Vieille Vignes Blanc is a stunning cuvée that takes us straight to the heart of Calce, where Lionel and Gérard Gauby founded their winery, which they carry on with full respect for nature and terroir. Their philosophy reduces intervention in the vineyard and in the cellar to a minimum, where long maturations of more than 15 months in very old vats are practised.
Côtes Catalanes Vieilles Vignes Blanc, is made from a blend of Grenache Gris, Maccabeu, Grenache Blanc, Chardonnay and Carignan Blanc from vines over 60 years old, with some of them over a century old. The age of the vines and the grey shale soils on which they grow give the wine great complexity, a lovely freshness and light vegetal aromas.
The nose reveals a very aromatic and powerful bouquet with notes of undergrowth, flint, anise and a hint of resin. It is very pleasant and concentrated. Good aeration is necessary to achieve this complexity, especially when young. The palate is dense and concentrated, revealing notes of candied lemon, vineyard peach and elderflower. The material is ample throughout. It finishes with some very fine bitterness that adds savouriness to this already very complete mouthfeel.
