COTTANERA
Cottanera, simbolo dell'Etna
The Cottanera winery is one of the most renowned and extensive wineries in the Etna area. The winery is located in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia, in the northern area of Etna, about 700 meters above sea level.
This area is particularly suitable for wine production thanks to the alluvial nature of the soil, which gives particular mineral scents to the wines, as well as the altitude at which the vines are located, which guarantees freshness and a good temperature range between day and night, giving the wines great elegance and a good propensity for ageing.
The company was founded in the 1960s by Francesco Cambria, initially as a farm, as this area is well suited for agricultural cultivation, and was then converted in the following decades to wine production. Over the years the company has expanded and today it can count on a total of 100 hectares, 65 of which are planted with vineyards, cultivated according to sustainable principles that respect nature and the land. The company's philosophy is also based on the combination of tradition and innovation, for example a viticulture based on ancient traditional techniques is contrasted with modern and innovative technological principles.
Mainly classic vines of the area are cultivated, such as Nerello Mascalese, Carricante, Inzolia, together with international vines such as Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. The grapes are cultivated with full respect for the territory and nature, to allow a healthy and integral development of them, and to give life to extremely authentic and territorial bottles.
