Chardonnay "The Old Port Righ Vineyard" 2019 Joshua Cooper
Chardonnay "The Old Port Righ Vineyard" 2019 is an Australian white wine produced by Joshua Cooper. The grapes are sourced from the historic 36 year old 'Portree Vineyard', one of the originals in the Macedon Ranges. The climate is very windy and it is located almost 2,000 feet above sea level, so the grapes have difficulty ripening, which is why the harvests are delayed.
After manual harvesting, with careful selection in the vineyard, the grapes are partially crushed with the foot and then pressed very gently and slowly for about five hours. After 24 hours the must is racked with all the very coarse solids into three Burgundy casks and a 300L Stockinger Hogshead. The wine sees one year in oak on full lees, without agitation or racking, then transferred to stainless steel with all the fine lees for a further six months élevage. The wine is lightly racked and bottled unfiltered with only a small amount of sulphur added to the wine the week before bottling.
This Chardonnay is initially very closed, with mineral aromas prevailing but with time stone opens up and the nose is enriched with hints of jasmine, citrus and lemon peel, notes of wild mint and coriander. In the mouth, once again very tight to start with, it opens up in the finish but remains consistently very acidic.
